Technology has come a long way and continues to improve. Now, you can send information to your dentist through your phone! Researchers at the University of Florida have created a smart mouth guard to help detect if you grind your teeth.
Bruxism is the name of the condition for people whom involuntarily or habitually grind their teeth. A major sign that you grind your teeth is if you wake up with headaches or jaw pain, especially during a stressful time if your life. According to Popular Science, 1 in 5 Americans do this.
Grinding your teeth may seem like a minor irritant but it has the potential for serious damage like insomnia, headaches, jaw pain, and damaged teeth. All conditions which could lead to a hefty medical/dental bill.
Before, patients would mainly have to spend the night at a sleep clinic to diagnosed bruxism. Sleep clinics typically make a patient uncomfortable and is a nuisance. The researchers who created the smart mouth guard did so in hopes that it would be less expensive and make it much easier to reach a diagnosis. There are sensors on the device that will determine which teeth are actually grinding and how hard they are grinding. Not only does the device diagnose bruxism but also it can actually be a treatment.
This technology could be used to create future smart mouth guards to determine if an athlete has likely had a concussion, if they are dehydrated, or if their body temperature increases to hazardous levels.
At this time, it is unclear when the smart mouth guard will go on the market or the costs involved.
